In very random order, now that I return to the states tomorrow, my thoughts on Ontario:
1. Northwestern Ontario basically looks just like Minesotta. The guard rails are different, the road signs are in km, and the wilderness is a little more wild, but other than that you really couldn't tell from the highway.
2. The North Shore is indeed gorgeous, and was well worth it. Though not everything to see is well marked. And some of the scenery could get just a little repetitive after awhile.
3. They are, generally at least, as ignorant about U.S. politics and affairs as we are about theirs. What they tend to see is the sensational stories. ...Which means Trump is totally the face of our whole nation right now as far as they're concerned, and multiple people brought up how embarrassing it must be living in the US (...which by no means am I saying it's not). Hillary is likewise just that lady whose husband was president and cheated on her. And while folks seem to have heard of Sanders, I got asked what position he was actually running for (surely not president!).
3. Yes. They actually are on a whole nicer than we are. Traffic is typically more polite too.
4. Yes, they do also say "eh" a lot. Which I will happily take over our constant use of "like".
5. I got mistaken as British. Three times. I don't have any idea why.
6. They have better candy bars than us! Did you know Cadbury makes stuff other than just those silly eggs? Mr Big Bars are amazing. Why don't we have them?
7. People view black bears up here the way we view raccoons, generally just nuisances to keep out of your trash and away from your pets.
8. Not that there could be much doubt, but universal healthcare is clearly a good idea.
9. It was great. I'm really glad I came.
I've done a number of tours around the US that you can read about here, starting with my humble beginnings on a Diamondback with a Walmart trailer heading from Lincoln to Seattle. I now work at a bike shop and have leave time which I am using to bike around Southeast Asia. So if that interests you, then read on and follow along for the ride. Choose your language, pick your phrase, whatever sounds like adventure. Sally forth? Allons-y? Eamus? Ah, what the heck, let’s just go!
